The day will combine didactic teaching with experiential exercises designed to support attendees’ reflection on the issues involved. 

Topics to be addressed: 

  • Classification of eating disorders – Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, atypical eating disorders, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorders, disordered eating (Restricted Intake Self Harm) 
  • Who gets eating disorders and what we know about why: predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors. 
  • Personality factors that lead to vulnerability including neurodivergence. 
  • The experience of having an eating disorder – day to day life 
  • The impact on carers 
  • The physical, psychological and social effects of eating disorders. 
  • Management of risk. 
  • Treatment approaches.  

Tutor – Brief Biography

Sam Clark-Stone RMN, FRSA 

Sam is a Mental Health Nurse by training and led and developed the Gloucestershire open access, all age community eating disorders service from 1996 to 2024. He developed a home treatment service for young people and a day treatment programme for people aged 16+. The service also pioneered implementation of the Body Project primary prevention intervention, collaborating with Gloucestershire Public Health Department and the Universities of the West of England and Gloucestershire.  

Sam previously worked with the Bristol Eating Disorders team for 10 years and was simultaneously the team leader for the central Bristol Community Mental Health Team where he developed experience of individual, group and family therapy. He worked part time as a trainer with the UK Eating Disorders Association for 8 years and has presented at numerous conferences. Sam has special interests in service development, training and the dissemination of evidence based treatments, especially Cognitive Behaviour Therapy-Enhanced (CBT-E) via whole team training.  

Sam was actively involved in setting up the British Eating Disorders Society (BrEDS) and has been Chair of the Trustees since it became a charity in 2018. He is also convenor and Co-Chair of the Adolescent Eating Disorders Research Consortium and a was a member of the Beat Clinical Advisory Group. He is currently a member of the organising committee for the London international Eating Disorders Conference. He has contributed as co-author to several research papers and was winner of the South West Region Parliamentary Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
