The workshop aims to address the following:

1. An overview of ‘serious mental illness’ (SMI) presentations that we see in counselling, for example, psychotic conditions, bipolar affective disorder, complex PTSD, complex dissociative disorders, and ‘personality disorder’
2. An exploration of the challenges we face when working with people with SMI
3. Practical ways to respond to those challenges when they arise, including the ‘do’s and don’ts’
4. The aspects of these conditions which lend themselves to counselling interventions; considering a ‘menu’ of interventions for a complex presentation
5. Practical strategies for working with trauma related-dissociation and emotional dysregulation in the room

There will also be space for questions and answers.

The workshop will involve a combination of didactic teaching and interactive exercises in order to enhance learning.

“I started working with people with mental health difficulties in 2000 in various settings including NHS and non-NHS inpatient, community and secure forensic settings. I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Surrey in 2009. Since then, I have completed further training and subsequently specialised in working with adults with complex difficulties, suffering with combinations of the following:

• Offending behaviour and forensic risk
• Personality Disorder
• Trauma and dissociative disorders
• Acute mental health problems
• Substance misuse disorder
• Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and learning disability

I have been practising for 11 years as an Expert Witness, providing a range of assessments for the Criminal, Immigration and Family Courts. Please refer to my Expert Witness pages for more detailed information.

I also deliver online therapies in the treatment of a range of mental health conditions. I adopt various therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Compassion-Focused approaches.”
