Neurodivergent clients may have different needs as a client group. The information and skills provided on this workshop are aimed at helping participants to recognise those differences and have confidence in responding to them.
We aim to provide a safe space where there is room to ask questions and discuss practice-based scenarios.
Topics Covered
Part one:
Psycho education:
- What do we mean by neurodivergence and how prevalent are the main types.
- A brief overview of common symptoms and presentations in adults
- What are the latest theories and memes within the neurodiversity community and how does that help us?
- Why terminology is important.
- Neurodivergence in women and girls
Part two:
Towards neurodiversity
- What does it mean to have a neuro-inclusive practice?
- The medical model versus a strength’s-based model
- The pathology of neurodivergence: The shadow of shame and the role of school-based trauma
Part three:
Developing a skills-based approach to working with neurodivergent clients
- Some ‘differentiated’ tips for working with this client group from a psycho-dynamically informed perspective.
- What might help my client within and outside of the therapy?
- The diagnosis process (what is useful for us to know)
- What to do if you suspect a client is neurodivergent, when and how to mention.

Aimed at
Counsellors and Psychotherapists in practice who have are experiencing working with or anticipating working with nuerodivergent clients.
Tutors
Corrina Wood is a Disability Consultant specialising in neurodivergent conditions. Corrina has an MA in Autism and is the founder of Platypus Training and Consultancy that provides support and training to families, individuals and professionals within the Southwest of England. Alongside this she has over 20 years of experience as a family support manager, is ADOS 2 trained, which means she can assess and screen for neurodivergent conditions as part of a team with other professionals and is a trainer for the CYGNET parenting training course. She is also co-founder of Joining Dots that provides expert evidence to the Family Court Service in cases involving neurodivergent children or parents.
Married to Nick Wood (see below) together they have four children all of whom have diagnoses of an autistic spectrum condition.
Nick Wood is an accredited counsellor and supervisor working in private practice. He was one of the first counsellors to be recognised by the National Autistic Society and has steadily built his private practice around a neurodivergent client base over the last twenty years. He has additional post qualification training in working with neuro divergent clients and has a special interest in supporting and developing neurodivergent therapists. Nick was formerly manager of the staff counselling service at Gloucestershire County Council and is co-author of BACP’s workplace counselling competencies. Nick identifies as dyslexic, although he’s never been formally tested and identifies with those that found school impossible to navigate. He is thankful that being a counsellor and trainer does not involve pen and paper!
Together Corrina and Nick bring a unique perspective and blend of specialisms and experiences; as academics, therapists and parents.
